This webinar will focus on working with clients who are Asian (-American).

We’ll be discussing and taking an introspective look at topics such as microaggressions, biases, tokenism and representation.

Intersection can sometimes make situations challenging so we’ll also talk about the effects of identity and labels.

Together, we’ll brainstorm and discuss what interpreters can do when working with Deaf Asian Americans. 

Educational Objectives:

1. Participants will understand and identify the subgroups of Deaf Asians.
2. Participants will list at least one way that culture and tradition affect how Deaf Asians
interact with authority, their peers and interpreters.
3. Participants will identify the steps they can take to become effective communication
facilitators as well as allies for Deaf Asians during this time of COVID-19.

About Your Speaker

Dr. Tina Childress

Dr. Tina Childress is an educational audiologist, technology and social media aficionado, late-deafened adult and bilateral cochlear implant recipient who is also fluent in ASL.


With her unique perspective and passion for sharing information, she is a sought out writer, volunteer, presenter, trainer and adjunct lecturer to families and professionals on a variety of technology-related topics. Tina is active on many local and national Boards and Committees where she is a strong advocate for accessibility and sharing resources. She currently lives in Champaign, IL with her husband and two daughters, all of whom she likes to call “hard of listening”.

Participants will receive a Post-Assessment form that will identify their involvement and understanding of diversity topics covered in the webinar. 

Participants will provide feedback via a presenter evaluation form. 

This course is being offered for 0.2 PS PPO (Power, Privilege, and Oppression) CEUs: 1 hour  webinar presentation & 1 hour of participation in the online community discussion forum following the webinar.
