Everyone has implicit bias. Because bias happens before thought it takes effort to recognize and un-do. How can interpreters recognize their own biases, and also how can interpreters facilitate the implicit bias of others when they realize it is part of the communication? In instances when racist bias is expressed against a BIPOC Deaf person, interpreters need special skills to maintain conditions of respect and demonstrate the antiracist principles for that BIPOC Deaf person to keep trust. ββThis course will introduce tools and ideas that will help interpreters to set their implicit bias aside and build trust between interpreter and consumer.
Educational Objectives:
1. Participants will describe an instance when bias influenced their interpreting.
2. Participants will explain at least two different ways power dynamics happen during interpreting.
3. Participants will describe their next step for improving their inner self-work.
4. Participants will list at least one statement or question that they will say to open the conversation with diverse
Deaf clients about the best ways to support them.
