This webinar will address some of the underlying problematic BIPOC representation issues from a BIPOC Deaf perspective of why BIPOC Deaf Interpreters are not well represented in our field of interpreting profession.  We, as interpreters are taught that we can do anything if we study and learn. However, oftentimes we as interpreters fail to realize how the lack of representation has a huge impact on both BIPOC Interpreters and BIPOC Deaf consumers, especially when the interpreter does not have the background and/or lived experience in order to do their job more accurately and effectively.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will define what Authentic Representation means.
  2. Participants will learn at least three common hidden forms of fear and power struggles when working with BIPOC Deaf Interpreters.
  3. Participants will identity hidden biases that sabotage working effectively with BIPOC Interpreters.
  4. Participants will list at least one statement or question that they will say to open the conversation with BIPOC Deaf Interpreters and/or Deaf consumers about the best ways to support them.
